And many more..

The beautiful setting of the Concert Hall in the RDS will be the hub of one of Metropolis Festival’s core elements. We are proud to partner with Red Bull Music Academy to host a series of conversations focusing on and highlighting the creativity that works in tandem with the music – the work of  visual artists, authors, DJs, producers and promoters, for example. To that end, we have curated an incredible line up of speakers for Friday and Saturday of this year’s festival.

The Red Bull Music Academy have been pairing music legends and emerging beatsmiths since 1998 in cities such as Berlin, Cape Town, Melbourne, Barcelona, Rome, São Paulo, London, Tokyo and New York City. This unique combination of old school knowledge and new school sounds is unrivalled for its creative exploration and achievement. Each Academy edition leaves behind structures to encourage musical collaboration and creative exchange for years to come. Currently there are twelve fully equipped Red Bull Studios around the world. So, without further ado, let’s tell you what we’ve got in store!

We’ll be welcoming Underworld’s Karl Hyde! Karl will be celebrating the publication of  I Am Dogboy, a beautiful, full colour collection of diaries and photographs he’s been putting together since ‘99.  The book, released on 2 November,  follows Hyde from childhood through to the exploratory early years of one of the world’s most renowned electronic acts, Underworld. This is an exceptionally special, once off event, happening only with us at the RDS! He will be talking about the book, with visual accompaniment and signing copies afterwards. Do not miss!

Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk), one of the most famous musicians in the history of electronica, will be joining us for an in-depth Q&A. Flür was the electro-drummer for German quartet Kraftwerk from 1974 to 1987. Kraftwerk are regarded as leaders in electro-music, with their influence having a lasting impact on many genres of music, including synthpop, hip hop and dance music.

With the incredibly sad passing of musical genius Prince earlier this year, we have invited Alexis Taylor (lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist with Hot Chip) and novelist Matt Thorne to take to the stage to discuss Prince’s life and outstanding body of work.  Matt is the author of ‘Prince’, his acclaimed book which focuses on Prince’s amazing musical output over the course of his career.

Prepare to be utterly enthralled by our next guest, Saul Williams. Williams has been breaking ground since 2001 and has gained global fame for his poetry and writings. He’s performed in places like The White House, Sydney Opera House, The Louvre, to countless villages, townships, community centers across the world. He will be doing a live spoken word performance, followed by an in depth interview and Q&A.

Ralph Rolle, drummer with CHIC and musical legend will be joined on stage by Hot Press’ Stuart Clark. They will be discussing Ralph’s 3 decades of professional experience, performing and recording with the likes of Nile Rodgers and CHIC, Sting, Bono, Bette Midler, Biggie Smalls, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Slash, D’Angelo, John Legend, Paul Simon and many more. He will also be giving a live drum workshop, which will appeal not only to drummers but all manner of musicians and vocalists. This is a real chance to see a drumming icon up close and personal.

We look forward to catching Wonder Mike and Master Gee of the seminal hip hop group, The Sugarhill Gang, too. Come check them out as they talk about their careers as musical pioneers, being renowned as the band to introduce hip hop to audiences in the US and around the world.

Canadian electronic songwriter, producer and vocalist Jessy Lanza has been described as ‘the latest and possibly greatest of the new ethereal soul girls’ by The Guardian and we look forward to hearing her discussing her records, career and experimentations.

For any aspiring electronic artists, the Irish Electronic Artists Panel is a must see. Featuring Irish acts like Krystal Klear & New Jackson (and more!), they’ll be talking about the business side of electronic music, their careers and how to breakthrough as electronic artists hailing from Ireland.

Hen’s Teeth Prints presents Fantasy 12 : Sleeve Notes , a celebration of iconic record artwork and what it takes to visually interpret the work of a musician. They’ll delve into how labels and artists get connected, the process of collaboration, and the push and pull between artist, label and musician in the process.

There are only 4 weeks left until we throw open the doors at the RDS to bring you a stellar line-up of amazing artists, tonnes of fascinating speakers and panels to check out, a host of fantastic art installations to see – and the world’s largest Mirror Ball, to boot!  Stay tuned for even more art and visual installations to be announced next week.

The countdown is ON.

Tuesday 25th October 2016 – SOLD OUT

Wednesday 26th October 2016 – EXTRA DATE ADDED!

“This hard-hitting new video from up-and-coming Shrewsbury singer-songwriter Dan Owen is an important piece of work. The song, ‘Made To Love You’, was written from the personal experience of Dan supporting a friend suffering in an abusive relationship, with the lyrics touching on the conflict of emotions felt by one partner to another.” – Shortlist London

Dan Owen has revealed a hard-hitting video for his new single ‘Made To Love You’, out now through LAB Records. ‘Made To Love You’ is becoming a rapid success across the world and entered No.2 in the French Spotify Viral Chart, while No.4 in Belgium and also charted in the Netherlands, Hungary, Turkey and Indonesia respectively.

His captivating songwriting and relentless touring has seen Dan already develop a fervent fanbase, which resulted in him selling out his headline show at London’s St.Pancras Old Church earlier this month.

Dan has just completed a 30-date European tour in support of Birdy. The singer was such a huge fan of Dan that she finished every night of her tour inviting him onstage to duet on her 2015 hit ‘Let It All Go’. He’s also been invited back to head out on the road with her again for more shows in the autumn.

The Shrewsbury vocal powerhouse has been turning heads ever since he first started playing live ten years ago, at the tender age of 13. He first rose to wider prominence after a video of him playing a stunning live cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘The Ballad Of Hollis Brown’ was uploaded by a random audience member to Reddit and became an overnight viral internet sensation.

Since then Dan’s own talents as a songwriter have blossomed and the result is a stunning selection of songs. His debut EP Bad For Me was released to high praise in 2015 and now ‘Made To Love You’ is the first taste of his upcoming Open Hands And Enemies EP.

Open Hands And Enemies sees Dan straddling swooning soul, throaty blues and carefully crafted pop sentiments, and is due for release on October 19th.

Dan will embark on an Irish Tour in December with shows planned in;

Dublin | Limerick | Kilkenny | Killarney | Cork | Galway | Belfast | Dundalk

It’s the biggest electronic party of the year! After a twelve year rest, the biggest dance spectacular Ireland had ever seen is returning to Dublin on the spookiest and best Bank Holiday of the year. On Halloween Bank Holiday Sunday October 30th, Winter Party ‘16 will transform the 3Arena

with a full sound, lighting & special FX production package along with performances from some of the world’s hottest electronic acts.

First up is king of techno and Cocoon Records label boss, it’s the godfather of techno SVEN VATH. Followed by the hottest new property in dance music and the man behind the Knee Deep label and parties, it’s Daley Padley aka HOT SINCE 82. Padley is a regular visitor to the capitol and has always played to sold out venues.

JON HOPKINS has been an elusive character, known to most as an expert producer, Ivor Novello-nominated composer of film scores, remixer and long term collaborator of Brian Eno and Coldplay. Yet, as Hopkins freely admits, the fact that his solo albums to date have been rather overshadowed by his work with others has meant that he’s been able to quietly develop his own identity, style and sound. We are delighted to welcome him to Winter Party for a very rare DJ set.

Next up is hometown hero and one of Richie Hawtin’s favourite DJ producers, Gavin Lynch, aka MATADOR – playing his new LIVE set for the first time in 3Arena.

Then it’s the turn of Oliver Jones aka SKREAM. Having produced for pop acts such as Kelis, Katy B and La Roux amongst others, the dubstep pioneer now incorporates house, techno and disco into his set – we can’t wait to see what he brings to the 3Arena stage.

With still more to announce, this 9 hour extravaganza starts with the six hour event in 3Arena from 6pm to midnight, followed by a city take over with after parties till very late all covered with one ticket on arguably the best bank holiday date of the year.

CONOR OBERST (Bright Eyes) – Bord Gais Energy Theatre – 5th Feb 2017

POD presents

CONOR OBERST (Bright Eyes)

An intimate solo performance

Bord Gais Energy Theatre

Sun 5th February 2017

Photo-18

“Fans take for granted that Mr. Oberst will reveal his every thought to them, from romance to personal philosophy to politics. He’s the image of sensitivity … Yet [he] isn’t just singing his diary … He also measures out every musical and verbal effect. The craftsmanship makes him seem even more unguarded.” —New York Times

POD announce an intimate solo performance from Conor Oberst in the beautiful surroundings of the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on Sunday, 5th February. This is Conor’s first show in Ireland in four years, following a sold out National Concert Hall show in February of 2013.

Conor will be releasing an eagerly anticipated solo album, Ruminations, available 14 October on Nonesuch Records. This incredibly special show will feature songs from both his new LP and Bright Eyes tracks.

The new record came about when Conor found himself hibernating in his hometown of Omaha after living in New York City for more than a decade. He emerged with the unexpectedly raw, unadorned solo album Ruminations. “I wasn’t expecting to write a record. I honestly wasn’t expecting to do much of anything. Winter in Omaha can have a paralyzing effect on a person but in this case it worked in my favour. I was just staying up late every night playing piano and watching the snow pile up outside the window. Next thing I knew I had burned through all the firewood in the garage and had more than enough songs for a record. I recorded them quick to get them down but then it just felt right to leave them alone,” says Oberst.

Conor began publicly releasing music in 1994 at the age of 14. Those early recordings, made in Omaha on four-track cassette by Oberst and his friends, were an introduction to the work of a prodigious songwriter whose creative outpouring would soon be widely lauded. Writing and recording prolifically over the next two decades, first with his band Bright Eyes and later under his own name—and at special moments as a member of Desaparecidos and Monsters of Folk—Oberst became known, the Los Angeles Times said, as an artist who “sees the world with fresh and fearless eyes.” The Times continued, “He weaves his findings into intimate songs whose melodies are as timeless as a hymnal and whose images are hauntingly poetic….He can command your attention with long narratives that have more words than a pocket dictionary, or stop you cold with a single line.”

Oberst went to ARC, the studio he built with his Bright Eyes bandmate and long-time friend Mike Mogis, to record. With the help of engineer Ben Brodin, he recorded all the songs in the span of 48 hours. The results are almost sketch-like in their sparseness, and they ultimately became the songs that comprise Ruminations. These tracks do not have the multi-layered instrumentation of the most recent Bright Eyes and solo albums: This is Oberst alone with his guitar, piano, and harmonica; the songs connect with some of the rough magic and anxious poetry that first brought him to the attention of the world, while their lyrical complexity and concerns make it obvious they could only have been written in the present. Ruminations is available to pre-order now from iTunes and from Nonesuch.com, where a limited number of pre-orders will include a signed print.

Tickets for this show are €28.50 (including booking fee) and go on sale on Friday, 2 September at 9:30am from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide

We’ve already announced the first round of music acts who’ll be taking to our stages at Metropolis Festival this November 3/4/5. Now, we’re ready to reveal our second round of brilliant acts who’ll be joining us in the RDS.

Friday

Groove Armada (DJ Set) | Clams Casino | Novelist | Mall Grab

Saturday

Floating Points (3hr DJ Set) | Klangkarussell | Shura

Across The Three Days

Grace Jones | DJ Shadow (Opening Party) | Solomun | Moderat

Groove Armada (DJ Set) | SBTRKT (DJ Set) | Booka Shade – Movements 10

Floating Points (3hr DJ Set) | BADBADNOTGOOD | Crystal Castles

The Sugarhill Gang | Shura | Clams Casino | Klangkarussell

Novelist | Fatima Yamaha | Fakear | Girl Band | Mall Grab

AND still plenty more to be announced ….

First up, the latest addition to this year’s line up, we’ll be joined by the legendary UK electronic duo, GROOVE ARMADA, who’ll be dipping into their back catalogue with what is guaranteed to be an unmissable DJ set.

We’ll also be welcoming the awesome FLOATING POINTS to Saturday’s bill for a very special 3 hour long extended set. Producer/DJ/Musician Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points has been on the scene since his first release in 2009 and delivered on his potential last year with his debut LP “Elaenia”, one of the finest albums of the year. Not only a talented producer, his reputation as an incredibly gifted DJ is renowned, which is why we’ve invited him to take to the stage for 3 hours this November!

With her debut album Nothing’s Real just released, English singer SHURA will be taking her soulful electronic sound to the RDS. We can’t wait to catch her perfectly formed pop tracks like ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ and ‘Touch’ which was co-produced with Joel Pott from Athlete and has clocked up over 20 million views and counting.

American hip-hop musician Michael Volpe, better known as CLAMS CASINO has produced tracks for ASAP Rocky and Mac Miller becoming one of the most enigmatic and sought after producers in hip-hop. Instead of producing for others, this time the favour was returned with an all star cast appearing on his debut studio album 32 Levels, released in July of this year, and features, amongst others, A$AP Rocky, Joe Newman (Alt-J), Lil B, Kelela and Vince Staples.

London MC NOVELIST has been nominated for Best Grime Act at the 2014 MOBO’s as well as a nomination for the BBC Sound of 2015. With regular plays on radio stations including Rinse FM and BBC Radio 1Xtra and having featured on Skepta’s much anticipated album ‘Konnichiwa’ – we can’t wait to catch one of the fresh faces of grime.

Next up, it’s Austrian electronic duo KLANGKARUSSELL – their big break came from their massive hit ‘Sonnentanz’ which reached the top 10 in six countries. Since their debut album Netzwerk in 2014, they’ve even turned their hand to remixes for Laura Mvula  and Max Manie.

Newer to the scene, but not to be underestimated, 22-year-old Jordon Alexander aka MALL GRAB is breaking all kinds of moulds on his rapid rise to recognition on the world stage. Expect original house and techno material from this energetic newcomer.
