And many more..

The beautiful setting of the Concert Hall in the RDS will be the hub of one of Metropolis Festival’s core elements. We are proud to partner with Red Bull Music Academy to host a series of conversations focusing on and highlighting the creativity that works in tandem with the music – the work of  visual artists, authors, DJs, producers and promoters, for example. To that end, we have curated an incredible line up of speakers for Friday and Saturday of this year’s festival.

The Red Bull Music Academy have been pairing music legends and emerging beatsmiths since 1998 in cities such as Berlin, Cape Town, Melbourne, Barcelona, Rome, São Paulo, London, Tokyo and New York City. This unique combination of old school knowledge and new school sounds is unrivalled for its creative exploration and achievement. Each Academy edition leaves behind structures to encourage musical collaboration and creative exchange for years to come. Currently there are twelve fully equipped Red Bull Studios around the world. So, without further ado, let’s tell you what we’ve got in store!

We’ll be welcoming Underworld’s Karl Hyde! Karl will be celebrating the publication of  I Am Dogboy, a beautiful, full colour collection of diaries and photographs he’s been putting together since ‘99.  The book, released on 2 November,  follows Hyde from childhood through to the exploratory early years of one of the world’s most renowned electronic acts, Underworld. This is an exceptionally special, once off event, happening only with us at the RDS! He will be talking about the book, with visual accompaniment and signing copies afterwards. Do not miss!

Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk), one of the most famous musicians in the history of electronica, will be joining us for an in-depth Q&A. Flür was the electro-drummer for German quartet Kraftwerk from 1974 to 1987. Kraftwerk are regarded as leaders in electro-music, with their influence having a lasting impact on many genres of music, including synthpop, hip hop and dance music.

With the incredibly sad passing of musical genius Prince earlier this year, we have invited Alexis Taylor (lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist with Hot Chip) and novelist Matt Thorne to take to the stage to discuss Prince’s life and outstanding body of work.  Matt is the author of ‘Prince’, his acclaimed book which focuses on Prince’s amazing musical output over the course of his career.

Prepare to be utterly enthralled by our next guest, Saul Williams. Williams has been breaking ground since 2001 and has gained global fame for his poetry and writings. He’s performed in places like The White House, Sydney Opera House, The Louvre, to countless villages, townships, community centers across the world. He will be doing a live spoken word performance, followed by an in depth interview and Q&A.

Ralph Rolle, drummer with CHIC and musical legend will be joined on stage by Hot Press’ Stuart Clark. They will be discussing Ralph’s 3 decades of professional experience, performing and recording with the likes of Nile Rodgers and CHIC, Sting, Bono, Bette Midler, Biggie Smalls, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Slash, D’Angelo, John Legend, Paul Simon and many more. He will also be giving a live drum workshop, which will appeal not only to drummers but all manner of musicians and vocalists. This is a real chance to see a drumming icon up close and personal.

We look forward to catching Wonder Mike and Master Gee of the seminal hip hop group, The Sugarhill Gang, too. Come check them out as they talk about their careers as musical pioneers, being renowned as the band to introduce hip hop to audiences in the US and around the world.

Canadian electronic songwriter, producer and vocalist Jessy Lanza has been described as ‘the latest and possibly greatest of the new ethereal soul girls’ by The Guardian and we look forward to hearing her discussing her records, career and experimentations.

For any aspiring electronic artists, the Irish Electronic Artists Panel is a must see. Featuring Irish acts like Krystal Klear & New Jackson (and more!), they’ll be talking about the business side of electronic music, their careers and how to breakthrough as electronic artists hailing from Ireland.

Hen’s Teeth Prints presents Fantasy 12 : Sleeve Notes , a celebration of iconic record artwork and what it takes to visually interpret the work of a musician. They’ll delve into how labels and artists get connected, the process of collaboration, and the push and pull between artist, label and musician in the process.

There are only 4 weeks left until we throw open the doors at the RDS to bring you a stellar line-up of amazing artists, tonnes of fascinating speakers and panels to check out, a host of fantastic art installations to see – and the world’s largest Mirror Ball, to boot!  Stay tuned for even more art and visual installations to be announced next week.

The countdown is ON.

INTERSKALACTIC Friday, 20 May, The Workman’s Club

The Workman’s Club presents

INTERSKALACTIC

Friday, 20 May, The Workman’s Club

We are so ready to welcome some SKA-VA-VOOM to The Workman’s Club with a performance from Interskalactic on Friday, 20 May. This 11-piece big-band are adding their own flavour to first-wave, old school Jamaican ska. These guys have deffo established themselves as a party favourite around these parts with their infectious ska buzz! We are dusting off our dancing shoes and our black- and- white check jacket for this one.

These lads are well used to having their audience dancing for two hours straight and still calling out for more! Their lively sets include the classic ska covers that we all want to hear, ska-ified (is that a word?) versions of popular hits and now some of their own original tunes.

With performances at Electric Picnic, Body & Soul, on The Late Late Show and supporting Madness already under their belt, it’s no wonder that Interskalactic have become hot property on the Irish festival and gig scene.

Support on the night will come from Too Fools. Named by The Last Mixed Tape in their “20 Ones To Watch in 2016” list, this lot make modern sounding music that is fresh, upbeat and trippy. Currently producing their own EP and gearing up for festival appearances, you want to catch these guys before they go HUGE.

This is so obviously a gig not to be missed. Expect to dance the soles off your shoes.

Eoin Glackin – The Club Classic EP Launch, 16 April @ The Workman’s Club

EOIN GLACKIN

SATURDAY, 16 APRIL, THE WORKMAN’S CLUB

 “Smashing it” – Ed Sheeran

“A genuine talent” – Dan Hawkins

“His songs make an instant connection” – Irish Independent

We are so stoked to welcome back Dublin singer-songwriter Eoin Glackin to mark the release of his new EP with a massive headline show at The Workman’s Club, Saturday 16 April.

Eoin Glackin is known for his roots- rock, story- teller vibes but is set to show another side to his song writing prowess with The Club Classic EP which features upbeat, pop-infused songs, which are more influenced by Prince and Beck than Kris Kristofferson.

Despite the new sonic-shift, Eoin assembled his long running band to tackle the new songs, while also enlisting some fresh blood in up and coming Irish producer, Paddy Hunt. After Eoin’s last album went on to be nominated in the Hot Press Awards 2016 for Album of the Year, we can expect some major buzz around this new, evolved style.

Eoin and his full band take to The Workman’s Club stage on Saturday, 16 April to perform all of the tracks from the hot off the grill EP, The Club Classic. Support on the night comes from Cork native Clare O’Mahony whose 2nd album goes on sale this spring.

“Some of the best lyrics almost any listener will have heard” – Fatea Magazine

“Like I’m watching a movie in my mind” – Damien Dempsey

ANGELINA’S DELI – READY TO SERVE!

ANGELINA’S DELI – READY TO SERVE!

Your neighbourhood deli, filled with freshly prepared, locally sourced produce and bursting with flavour!

Following on from the opening of Angelina’s Restaurant on Percy Place in November, a brand new sister deli has flung open its doors and is ready to serve up beautiful breakfasts, sandwiches, homemade soups, fresh beautiful salads, golden, flaky pastries and coffee any way you like it!

From 7 ‘til 11am, swing in to Angelina’s Deli for breakfast and start the day right! Think Californian breakfast rolls, homemade porridge, granola yoghurt fruit pots and fresh fruit salads. Grab a homemade smoothie or a fresh pressed juice made in-house. If pastries are your thing, the deli is full to bursting with beautiful baked goods. Angelina’s Deli are serious about coffee. TwoFifty Square roast their own beans just up the road in Rathmines and their flavour packed coffee is served up whatever way you like – espressos, long blacks, flat whites, lattes, cappuccinos – the choice is yours.

Lunch is served up from 11:30 – 3pm and the offering has been designed by Angelina’s Head Chef, Ryan Bell. The premise is simple – get a seriously great sandwich in 3 easy steps. Step 1 – choose your bread – sourdough, a baguette or multiseed.   Step 2 – choose your meat, juicy pieces of torn, rotisserie chicken, succulent roast beef, hot turkey or generous slices of baked ham. Step 3? Pick a style of sambo!

The New York style is made up of crispy bacon, tangy ranch dressing, egg salad, iceberg lettuce and cheese. The Mexican style features lashings of avocado, corn, jalapeno, lime mayo and salsa. The Hipster sandwich has a filling portion of roasted butternut squash, baby spinach, bulgur wheat, chickpea hummus and toasted seeds. The Italian style sandwich is laden with kale and Caesar leaves, parmesan and quinoa, drizzled with Green Goddess dressing. The Texan style comes filled with beetroot and carrot slaw, rocket, BBQ sauce and chipotle sour cream.

What about soup? Grab a pot from the fridge – filled with fresh, lovely ingredients like tofu, chicken, pulled pork or seafood. Bring the pot up to the counter, where it will be filled to the brim with Angelina’s homemade broth and there you have it – a steaming pot of goodness! Minimal effort, maximum taste. If you’re hankering for a salad, opt for the deli’s Salad Bowl, where you pick 3 of our eye catching and delicious salads plus a protein. The salads are made up fresh every day with veg sourced locally.

Check out Angelina’s Deli. Order and take away, pull up a stool up by the counter or grab a seat outside the front!
